A brow that has settled lower with age, with the upper lid heavier for it, is the first use Ultherapy was cleared for in the US: to lift the eyebrow, in 2009. In a study published in 2010, masked raters saw a clinically significant brow lift in 30 of the 35 people evaluated after one treatment. The clinician runs lines of focused ultrasound above the brow and across the forehead at the depths chosen from the image. The heat sets off the body's healing response, which builds new collagen over three to six months and lifts the brow, by 1.7 mm on average in that study. What it does at the brow
The tail of the brow lifts and the upper lid looks more open; a heavy, dropped brow is more than Ultherapy lifts, and the clinician says so at the free consultation. The eyelid itself is not treated, and the label warns against the eyes, the eyelids and inside the orbital rim, so the lines stay above the brow.
What the study measured
In the 2010 study, 35 people were evaluated after one treatment of the forehead, temples, cheeks, under the chin and the side of the neck: masked raters saw a clinically significant brow lift in 86%, by 1.7 mm on average. The brow and eyes page sets out the figures.
The session and the result
About 30 minutes for the brow and forehead, or 60 to 90 with the face, with a comfort plan agreed beforehand; redness for a few hours, swelling for a day or three, tenderness for up to two weeks. The lift builds over three to six months, when we photograph it, and holds for around a year in our experience, with a repeat considered after 12 to 18 months.
